In a world where beauty often seems synonymous with thinness and youth, developing healthy self-esteem can feel like an overwhelming challenge. Everyday media bombards us with images and messages that promote narrow body ideals, leaving many feeling less than worthy. Yet, it’s crucial to understand that self-esteem is far more than just how we look. It encompasses our sense of worth across various aspects of life. Whether you are a peri-menopausal woman facing the transitions of aging or a concerned parent guiding a child through their self-image journey, grasping the core principles of self-esteem can empower both you and your loved ones to embrace who you truly are.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is our personal assessment of our own value. It shapes our feelings about ourselves and significantly impacts our decisions, relationships, and mental health. Healthy self-esteem involves a balanced appreciation of our strengths and weaknesses, coupled with the belief that we deserve love and respect just as we are.

To illustrate its significance: a study by the National Institutes of Health found that individuals with high self-esteem are 50% more likely to engage in healthy activities, while those with low self-esteem report feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and even depression.

The Impact of Body Image on Self-Esteem

Today's culture, filled with images of idealised, often plastic-enhanced bodies and heavily filtered photos, can create a direct link between body image and self-esteem. A staggering 70% of women feel pressured to achieve their ideal body weight to be considered attractive, often leading to unhealthy dieting and negative self-perception. Many feel compelled to change their appearance to feel valued or accepted! This means spending hard-earned money on changing our faces or bodies, and I'm not sure who we are trying to impress?

A positive relationship with body image is vital for building confidence. Instead of viewing our bodies as objects subject to judgment, we should see them as invaluable vessels that allow us to live our lives fully. Adopting a mindset of body positivity can greatly boost our self-esteem and overall well-being.

Strategies for Building Healthy Self-Esteem

1. Practice Self-Compassion

Treat yourself as you would a dear friend. When facing perceived flaws, remind yourself that being imperfect is part of being human. By practicing self-compassion, you can reduce the pressure to fit into unrealistic beauty standards. For instance, during difficult days, reflect on how you would comfort a friend in your position and apply that same kindness to yourself.

2. Engage in Affirmative Self-Talk

The language we use when speaking to ourselves holds power. Combat negative thoughts by replacing them with affirming statements. Instead of focusing solely on your flaws, recognise your achievements. Practising daily affirmations can improve self-worth. Be careful with this one, as it can also highlight very negative and painful beliefs we have been holding onto. Therapy can help to gently challenge these negative beliefs in order to then replace them with more positive ones.

3. Redefine Beauty

Beauty is subjective and diverse. By challenging narrow definitions and embracing a broader perspective, you can lessen the grip such standards may have on your self-esteem. For example, surround yourself with representation that celebrates all body types, all skin colours, all ages, whether it’s through art, media, or friendships.

4. Limit Social Media Influence

While social media can connect us, it can also distort our view of beauty. Consider following accounts that foster positivity and self-acceptance rather than those that promote unrealistic standards. The average social media user spends over two hours per day online; intentionally curating this time can have profound implications for your self-esteem. And please, please, unfollow any accounts that bring up feelings of negativity in you, unhealthy comparisons and/or feelings of jealousy or shame.

5. Focus on Health, Not Size

Shifting your focus from weight to overall health can liberate your mindset. This is such an important message! Engage in physical activities that make you feel energised and fulfilled, such as dancing, running, or taking a nature walk. Studies show that individuals who focus on fitness over appearance report higher satisfaction levels with their bodies and their lives. Our bodies are wonderful creations and we certainly start to appreciate them more when we suffer with ill-health or aging causes more limitations to movement. Enjoy your body today, as it is. Be healthy and have fun. I haven't weighed myself in years and years. I have no idea of my current weight, and I do not need to know.

6. Surround Yourself with Supportive People

The influence of our social circles can't be overstated. Spend time with friends and family who appreciate you for who you are, beyond mere physical appearance. Positive relationships can enhance your sense of self-worth and encourage you to combat negative thoughts. If you spend time with people who are constantly judging their own or other's appearances, maybe change circles. Get some new friends or walk away and avoid listening to it.

7. Set Realistic Goals

Achievable goals boost your sense of purpose and accomplishment. These do not have to be appearance-related; celebrate milestones in your professional or personal life. When you focus on your skills and attributes outside of your looks, you strengthen your self-esteem. Engage in activities for your mind, your body and your soul.

Special Insights for Mums

As a mother, you play a pivotal role in shaping not only your self-esteem but also that of your children. Engaging in conversations about body image with your daughters is crucial. Inspire them to find strength in their unique qualities by encouraging activities that reflect their talents and passions.

Teach them the principle that true beauty stems from kindness and confidence, rather than just appearance. By modeling this behavior, you establish a strong foundation for them, helping cultivate self-esteem that withstands societal pressures. Personally, I think it's unwise to speak about dieting around children. They notice what we do as parents, if we are worrying about our weight and the food we eat, they will grow up thinking the same. If we enjoy a healthy lifestyle and enjoy food and exercise they will absorb those messages for their future.

Embracing Lasting Change

In a world that often prioritises outward appearances, nurturing healthy self-esteem is essential. Recognising that our worth extends far beyond how we look can transform how we view ourselves and relate to others. By practicing self-compassion, boosting positive self-talk, and encouraging inclusivity, you can create a more positive self-image.

Perhaps the greatest gift you can give to your children is teaching them that self-esteem starts with how we treat ourselves and how we treat others. Highlighting kindness, authenticity, and health can foster a generation that feels confident and capable, regardless of societal ideals. which change with the wind anyway.

With concerted effort and time, developing healthy self-esteem becomes a powerful antidote to the unrealistic ideals that surround us. Together, let’s challenge these myths and discover the beauty in our unique selves.
